Walk for Peace in Palestine

Councillor Habib Rehman joined thousands of Teessiders in a Walk for Peace on Saturday, 17 January in support of peace in Gaza.

Some 2,000 peace campaigners brought parts of Middlesbrough to a standstill, as they walked from the entrance to Albert Park on Linthorpe Road to the town hall, in which the supporters of peace joined together to express their displeasure at the Gaza conflict. The streets of Middlesbrough were filled with cries of "Free, Free Palestine" during Saturday's Walk.

At the end of the Walk outside the Town Hall, world famous journalist Yvonne Ridley, North-east MEP Stephen Hughes and Frank Cook MP, were among the speakers who highlighted the brutal assault on Gaza. Peter Smith, Chair of Teesside Against the War Coalition, who co-ordinated the Walk For Peace, said: “When people are watching these events, they have a choice to make. “They can either stay in their homes and remain silent, or they can come out and stand with the Palestinians.”

Teesside Against the War is planning a range of activities in protest against events in Gaza, with more information on possible debates, rallies and film shows to follow.
