Habib Leads The Way To Safety

A local Councillor is helping Cleveland Fire Brigade increase fire safety in its ‘Whatever It Takes’ areas by having a Home Fire Safety Check carried out in his home.
Firefighers will be visiting Councillor Habib Rehman’s home in Wellsley Road , Middlesbrough, to carry out a Home Fire Safety Check to reduce the risk of fire in his home on Thursday 2 August at 10am.
The checks normally take approximately 15 minutes where firefighters will check for potential fire hazards, give vital safety tips, help him make an escape plan in case of a fire and fit smoke alarms.
Councillor Rehman is hoping that others in the area follow his example and help the Brigade in the University Ward where the ‘Whatever It Takes’ scheme, which is a multi-agency initiative to improve the safety and local environment for residents, is targeted.
Tony Goodings, Community Liaison Manager said: “The ‘Whatever It Takes’ initiative is an ongoing project which involves numerous agencies including Cleveland Police, Middlesbrough Council and Safer Middlesbrough Partnership, going into a chosen area to make a difference. There are four areas we are concentrating our efforts on which are the University, Gresham, Ayresome and Middlehaven areas of Middlesbrough.
“The scheme is not only trying to improve fire safety in the area but home security, clean up the streets, promote healthier living, deter crime and anti-social behaviour and many other issues that the residents have.
“We would like every resident to have a Home Fire Safety Check carried out in their home to help keep them safer from fire but sometimes there are barriers and we can’t access everyone.
“By Councillor Rehman having a Home Fire Safety Check carried out in his home, we hope this will encourage other people in the area to have one and signup to this free service that could save someone’s life.
“Councillor Rehman is also furthering our partnership work by inviting the Brigade to promote Home Fire Safety Checks at the opening of Saltwell’s Park, in the University Ward, which has been built to improve the area, on Saturday 11 August.
Councillor Habib Rehman said: “As a newly elected Councillor I have been busy consulting with residents and working with professional agencies in order to identify and prioritising the main issues affecting residents of University ward.
“It is an honour and privilege to support such an important and life-saving project organised by Cleveland Fire Brigade. I would urge and encourage everyone to have a free Home Fire Safety Check carried out in their homes.”
