Chewing Gum Campaign

Middlesbrough Council is taking part in a national advertising campaign to encourage responsible gum disposal and to remind people that dropping gum is an offence carrying up to an £80 fixed penalty notice.

The campaign which is run by the Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG) will start on Monday 22nd September for 4 weeks and will focus on the town centre where posters will be on display in various locations including telephone boxes, bus shelters and local buses.

The council has produced ‘gum wraps’ which will be available free across Middlesbrough in:

  • Shops
  • Pubs
  • Clubs
  • Council leisure facilities

Useful information

Gum wraps are slips of recycled paper, contained in a small card wallet that people can place their gum in when they have finished with it. So they can keep it safely wrapped until they are able to dispose of it later in a bin. Council Staff will be monitoring the amount of chewing gum deposited before, during and after the advertising campaign to determine its success.
