Charter for Children's Play

90% of adults played out regularly in their street as children. Yet 1 in 3 of today's children say they don't play out in their street at all.

This is a timebomb for children’s future health, development and happiness, and the causes and consequences are having a negative impact on our communities. Recent local reaction to proposed cuts to the Playbuilder Programme, and the national coverage this generated, only tends to confirm how important this issue is for families.

Help spread the word about the value of play - The Charter for Children's Play sets out a vision for play, plus the basic principles of what play means for children.

The Charter for Children's Play aims to be a catalyst for individuals and organisations to examine and improve their provision for children and young people's play and informal recreation. Any organisation that provides services which impact on children can formally adopt the charter. The charter was first published in 1992 and was later revised in 1998 as the New Charter for Children's Play.

The Charter for Children's Play contains eight principles to outline a vision of play. Each statement is accompanied by a short paragraph describing it in more detail. The complete charter is made up of a four-page leaflet that includes the statements, an introduction to the charter, its purpose and a list of supporting documents.
